Puglia in October: Weather, Golden Season & Where to Stay

October is when Puglia slows down, empties out, and settles back into its natural pace. The summer crowds are gone, the intense heat has passed, and the region opens up to a different kind of travel. It marks the start of the olive harvest, when local kitchens turn their focus to rich autumn menus and historic towns return to the easy cadence of everyday Italian life.

Puglia weather in October

In October, Puglia runs mild during the day and cool at night, with weather that shifts noticeably as the month goes on. Daytime temperatures usually sit between 15 and 23°C, cooler in the mornings and evenings. The sea stays close to its summer warmth for a while, averaging around 22°C. Rain is generally light, falling on roughly a quarter of the month’s days, with plenty of sunshine in between.

The catch is that this covers the whole month, and early October looks quite different from late October. The first couple of weeks still carry real summer warmth, warm enough for lunch outdoors without a second thought. By the last week or so, the air has cooled properly and an evening jacket stops being optional. Pack for both ends of that range: light layers for the day, something cosier for after dark, and a swimsuit, since there’s a great chance you’ll get to use it.

Can you still swim in Puglia in October?

Yes, especially early in the month, though it really comes down to timing.

In the first week or two, the sea is still near its summer temperature and a proper beach day is realistic. Some beach clubs wind down by early October, so you’re more likely to enjoy a quiet public cove than a fully staffed beach club with loungers and umbrellas.

By mid-October, swimming is still doable on a warm, calm day, but it’s no longer something you can build a plan around. This is really the strongest stretch for everything else: comfortable enough to walk a town for hours, drive without the heat working against you, and sit outside for a long lunch. The sea becomes a bonus if the day allows for it, rather than the reason you’re there.

Late October changes the character of the trip. Swimming still happens, but the water’s colder and far more dependant on the specific day. If a beach holiday is the goal, this end of the month isn’t the strongest window for it. If you’re there for the towns, the food, and the pace, it barely matters.

Why October is Puglia’s golden season

The olive harvest runs through Salento and the Valle d’Itria in October, and it shapes a lot of what the month feels like. Olio nuovo, the season’s first-pressed oil, starts turning up on menus and at local producers almost as soon as it’s ready, and the local wine season follows close behind. Restaurants that were fully booked out in August have room to breathe. Bakeries have time for a conversation. It isn’t a consolation prize for missing beach season, it’s a different version of Puglia, built around what the region is actually growing and cooking this time of year. To walk among the trees behind the oil, our concierge can book a guided hike through centuries-old olive groves above the sea.

Experience October in Puglia with Puglia Luxury Homes

Crisp autumn air, rich olive harvest traditions, and crowd-free historic towns create the ultimate seasonal escape in southern Italy.

Luxury Italian bedroom with fireplace, vaulted ceiling, and refined seating area

Palazzo Cesare M.G. sits in the historic centre of Lecce and is the one property in our collection with an indoor spa pool, set under stone arches, so swimming here has nothing to do with what’s happening outside. There are wood-burning fireplaces for cooler evenings too, and Lecce’s baroque churches, galleries, and restaurants are a short walk from the door. For ideas on how to spend your days there, you can check out our guide to things to do in Lecce.

Luxury stone villa with traditional trulli cones, large swimming pool, sun loungers and ancient olive trees in the Puglia countryside

Villa Arteviva sits on the hills above Ostuni, in the heart of the Valle d’Itria, within seven hectares of ancient olive groves. The Trulli, one of its restored stone buildings, has a timber-beamed living room with a fireplace for cooler evenings. Staying here in October puts you among the olive groves as the harvest gets under way. For more on the town and the surrounding Valle d’Itria, you can check out our guide to things to do in Ostuni.

Jacuzzi on the rooftop of Casa Campanella, offering a stunning sea view for ultimate relaxation.

Casa Campanella, in Gagliano del Capo, is smaller and quieter, with a rooftop hot tub and a sea-view terrace. It suits a couple or a small group after a cosy shoulder-season base rather than a sprawling estate, and the hot tub works just as well on a cool October night as it does in summer.

FAQs

Can you swim in Puglia in October?

Yes, especially early in the month. As October progresses, swimming becomes more weather-dependant, so it’s worth treating it as a welcome bonus rather than the main itinerary.

Is October a good time to visit Puglia with kids or as a couple?

Both work well. The quieter towns and milder pace suit families who’d rather skip the crowds, and a villa with strong indoor amenities gives everyone options if the weather turns for a day.

Do Puglia villas stay open through October?

Yes. Many, including the three above, are set up with autumn and winter stays in mind, with heating, indoor pools, or hot tubs that don’t rely on summer weather to be enjoyable.

When is the olive harvest in Puglia?

It runs broadly through October into November, though exact timing shifts a little depending on the area and year.
